Interview with Shannon O’Dell of

I recently connected with Pastor Shannon O’Dell and really appreciated his counterintuitive approach to ministry. His basic premise is that God is at work just as much in rural America as He is in the cities. His passion is to encourage pastors in their efforts, regardless of their size, with the understanding that most churches are numerically small.

I thought you would find his responses to a few questions we asked him interesting.

Shannon, you state in your book “God loves to work in places of obscurity.” Can you tell us more about how you’ve seen this realized in your church?

Shannon: “The speed at which the testimony of a transformed life travels in rural America is electric! God desires to receive all the credit and He deserves it even in the middle of nowhere.”

How has Brand New Church employed marketing?

Shannon: “Word of mouth has by far been the most effective. Social media, such as twitter and facebook, has accelerated our events and activities as well.”

Is there ONE thing you would recommend to any pastor of any church?

Shannon: “Be CREATIVE and do everything with EXCELLENCE.”
