SEO Shell Games

I was baffled.
Fake sites?
An elderly friend asked me to be present when his company brought in a marketing/SEO consultant for an afternoon meeting. I had cautioned him in the past that individuals who promise you a number-one placement on Google should be examined deeply before you take them at their word.
This marketing individual (who we’ll call Andrew) touted such an offer and so I asked him about his tactics.
Fake sites.
Andrew enthusiastically explained that he creates pages within unused sites that are relevant to the content created by his clients and then links to his client’s sites! He has over two dozen websites that he employes for this purpose so that individuals/organizations who hire him will instantly look more reputable.
Be cautious when you engage an SEO firm and don’t be afraid to question their tactics.
Unbelievable.

The entire dialogue blew me away.

An elderly friend asked me to be present when his company brought in a marketing/SEO consultant for an afternoon meeting. I had cautioned him in the past that individuals who promise you a number-one placement on Google should be examined deeply before you take them at their word. Typically, it is a safe bet that white hat tactics are not being employed.

This marketing individual (who we’ll call Andrew) touted such an offer and so I asked him about his methodology.

Fake sites.

Andrew enthusiastically explained that he creates pages within unused sites that are relevant to his client’s field of work. Once the pages appear legitimate, he links to his client’s sites! He has over two dozen websites that he employes for this purpose so that individuals/organizations who hire him will instantly look more reputable.

This black hat tactic is known as interlinking and it is difficult to trace, yet rather common. The most surprising element for me was the enthusiasm that Andrew conveyed over using such an illegitimate method.

Be cautious when you engage an SEO firm and don’t be afraid to question their tactics.

You might be shocked by what you discover.

  1. My advice to clients is to remind them that Google has a great development history. And they will eventually put an end to the black hat "shell game". Who are you going to put your money on Google or the guy selling you smoke and mirrors? Good post. Thanks.

    • I agree, Matt. If you're going to invest money, time, and effort into an SEO venture then you need to be sure that it's not only a wise investment but one that will last. The immediate gains to black hat tactics will be forgotten when your site is penalized or black-listed.

      Thanks for stopping by.
